The book I choose to do my live project was “The secret diary of Adrian Mole” a classic book for the new generation of readers. A book of the Puffin Collection, the goal, design a cover with an imaginative concept and able to communicate the how original and hilariously funny is the book. To sum up, the design of the cover had to be an imaginative concept and original with a strong use of typography. Be a difference from other books that it will be competing against in the market, and be able to sit on the shelves of a supermarket or ebook store as easily as it sits on those of more traditional bookshops.
In order to realise the illustration for the cover, first of all, I researched all the editions that have been made of the book
I read the book, one of the most important thing to do. In the book, I understood who was Adrian Moles, his thoughts, what he felt, what were his problems. Even though is considered a book for teenagers, when I read the book I realised that it was also a book for adults. This is because, Adrian Mole, as I said before, in the diary he talks about some of the historic world events of the time, such as the Falklands War and the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana, the birth of Prince William. And he criticises the prime minister Margaret Thatcher, listing her as one of his worst enemies.
Sketches relised during the process
Thanks to this project I had the opportunity to work in a real briefing. Furthermore, I also had the opportunity to work for an important company such as The Penguin Random House. From my point of view having this kind of opportunities is very important, because you can work as a real professional, not only this but also the motivation that your design can be realised and become a real product, that people will see and buy in stores. If I had to do something different that would be the process.I would have work more in the typography and I would have tried to balance better the text with the drawing. Do a depth research of colours, wich colours are better for this kind of books. Moreover, I would have tried a different creative process, more hand drawing instead of digital drawing. But, without a doubt, one of the most difficult parts of this project was the design of the typography and decide which colour was the best for the cover.
